Ancient Gibeon is located on the south edge of today’s village of Al Jib, only 5 miles northwest of Jerusalem. In Biblical times, many important events happened at Gibeon. The Gibeonites disguised themselves and tricked Joshua into making a treaty with them (Joshua 9). Abner confronted Joab at the ‘Pool of Gibeon’ (2 Sam 2). King Solomon went to offer sacrifices at the high places of Gibeon and received wisdom from the Lord (1 Kings 3)
Archaeologists discovered the possible site of the ‘Pool of Gibeon’ in 1957. A spiral staircase along the wall descends into limestone until it meets the water table. It is 40 feet in diameter and 35 feet deep.
