Caves in Palestine
There are many caves in Palestine especially in the Judean lowland. The Old Testament mentions that several people lived in caves during emergency crises. Lot and his two daughters lived in a cave after Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed (Gen 19:30). David (I Sam 22:1) and Elijah (I King 19:9) both lived in caves when their lives were in danger. Samson ran from the Philistine (Judges 15:8), and Obadiah hid 100 prophets from Queen Jezebel in two caves (I King 18:4).
Today, there are 3500 caves around Bet Guvrin National Park, which was named a World Heritage site in 2014.
